Rail transport is still a very common method of transporting crude oil as well as NGLs across Western Canada and even into the US for export as pipeline capacity is constrained.
Unit trains are comprised of a single commodity and are typically assembled and disassembled at a single origin and destination, providing economies of scale, short lead times and rail freight efficiencies. Being able to efficiently load and offload these railcars at terminals safely is critical.
